Saints Peter and Paul church in Ludvíkov pod Smrkem
About this place
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Ludvíkov pod Smrkem is a Gothic parish church standing in a small village that today forms part of Nové Město pod Smrkem, in the Liberec Region, right at the foot of the Jizera Mountains near the Czech-Polish border. Usually closed to the public, it nonetheless ranks among the oldest and best-preserved sacred buildings in the whole Frýdlant area.
Where is the church and how do you get there?
Ludvíkov pod Smrkem is now a part of the town of Nové Město pod Smrkem, in the Liberec District close to the border with Poland. The church stands in the middle of the village, along the road heading toward Frýdlant, and its tower is visible from some distance across the surrounding farmland. The landscape here is a mix of agriculture and low mountains, with the village stretched along a stream at the first slopes of the Jizera range. The easiest way to reach it is by car from Frýdlant or from Nové Město pod Smrkem itself; the area is also crossed by a network of hiking and cycling trails linking the neighboring villages.
What is the history behind the building?
The present church dates back to 1346, making it one of the oldest surviving village churches in the Frýdlant region. Its stone tower is especially significant: Ludvíkov pod Smrkem is one of only two villages in the Frýdlant area with a documented medieval stone church tower still standing. The tower was raised higher in 1560, giving it the taller silhouette that still rises above the village rooftops today.
What will you see inside?
The building is a simple single-nave structure on a rectangular plan, with a square presbytery and a rectangular sacristy attached on the north side. The presbytery is covered by an early Gothic cross vault without ribs, a construction typical of the earliest phase of church building in the region. Inside the nave, a three-sided wooden gallery has survived, once used by worshippers during services.
The interior holds several pieces worth noting. The main altar dates from around 1710, complemented in the 19th century by a painting created in a matching style. A Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, made in the second half of the 18th century, stands out among the furnishings — this saint is widely venerated in Czech churches as a protector against floods and slander. In the vestibule stands a late Gothic stone baptismal font from the 16th century, one of the oldest surviving fittings in the building. The sacristy, in turn, holds a memorial plaque dedicated to the victims of the First World War.
Can you visit the church today?
No regular services are held here any longer, so access to the interior is very limited. A visit is therefore best approached as a walk around the exterior — taking in the Gothic tower and the plain, austere architecture — while entry inside typically requires arranging access in advance with whoever looks after the building, or catching a local parish event.
