Saint Christopher church
About this place
St. Christopher's Church is a small hilltop church above Tisens (Tesimo) in South Tyrol, perched on the Vorbichl hill on the Sun Plateau above Merano. It's the only building in the whole municipality that can be spotted from the valley floor below — its lone tower and modest nave stand out on the slope long before you actually reach the village.
Where does the church come from?
The building's roots go back to the 13th century, though today only the tower survives from that original structure, recognizable by its distinctive twin-arched windows. Everything else was rebuilt in 1603. The Vorbichl hill itself was already settled in prehistoric times, making it one of the older inhabited spots in the Tisens area — long before the church was ever raised on top of it.
How do you get up to the Vorbichl?
The church sits at the summit of the hill, 682 meters above sea level, reached via the signposted Vorbichl nature trail (Erlebnisweg Vorbichl). The full loop takes roughly two hours at an easy pace and works well for families: along the way you'll pass a small pond, a children's playground, and information boards explaining the local nature and history. The most convenient starting point is the village center of Tisens or nearby Prissian, from where the path climbs gently through meadows and orchards.
What will you actually see there?
The main draw is the viewpoint right by the church. From here you get sweeping views over the Adige valley, the surrounding slopes of the Sun Plateau, and the mountain ranges framing Merano. The church itself is a plain, stone structure from the outside — the old tower with its twin-arched windows is by far its most distinctive feature. While you're in the area, it's worth detouring to the International Felt Art Trail (Internationaler Filzkunstweg), an open-air display of sculptures and installations made of felt, scattered across the meadows close to the hill.
When is the best time to visit?
Because the trail runs across open, sun-exposed slopes with little shade, spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for the walk, when temperatures stay mild. Summer views are just as rewarding, but it's best to start in the morning before the heat builds up. In winter the path can ice over, so it's worth checking conditions before setting out.
Frequently asked questions
Is the hike up to Vorbichl difficult? No — it's a gentle, well-marked walking route suitable for most visitors, including families with children. The full loop takes about two hours.
Can you go inside the church? The church is still used for worship and access inside isn't always guaranteed — the safest bet for a visit is the surrounding viewpoint and the tower's exterior architecture.
What else is worth seeing nearby? Right next to the hill runs the International Felt Art Trail with open-air artistic installations, and the Vorbichl itself offers a pond, playground, and information boards for families.
How do you get to Tisens/Tesimo? The village sits on the Sun Plateau above Merano, about 15 km northwest of Bolzano — the easiest way there is by car or local bus from Merano.
