Rozhledna Sylván

Pilzno, Czechia

About this place

Sylván Lookout Tower rises on Sylván Hill (414 m above sea level) on the northern edge of Plzeň, in the Severní Předměstí district, roughly 3.5 km from the city centre, just off Karlovarská street. Unlike most Czech lookout towers, Sylván wasn't built for tourists in the first place — it started life as a telecommunications mast and only later opened its platform to the public.

Why does a telecom mast have a viewing platform?

The tower was erected in 2000 by the mobile operator T-Mobile Czech Republic. A massive reinforced-concrete foundation carries a five-section steel structure weighing 44 tonnes, with the mast reaching a total height of 70 metres. In 2003 part of the structure was opened as a public viewpoint, and since 2006 the Plzeň 1 municipal district has entrusted its operation to the local František Křižík Grammar School, which still runs it today.

What can you see from the platform?

The viewing platform sits at a height of 23 metres, reached by 122 steps. From up there, the closest views take in Plzeň itself: the districts of Košutka, Vinice, Doubravka and Slovany spread out directly below, along with the city centre and the ruins of Radyně Castle further away, plus the Skvrňany and Nová Hospoda districts. On clear days the view extends much further, toward the Šumava mountains and the Bohemian Forest (Český les), the Brdy hills, and even the German peaks of Velký Javor (Grosser Arber) and Hohenbogen across the border. That range makes Sylván one of the better vantage points around Plzeň without having to leave the city.

How do you get there, and when's the best time to visit?

The tower stands right off Karlovarská street — driving in from the city centre, you turn left at the traffic lights and continue up to the foot of the hill. It's an easy stop for anyone already staying in Plzeň, only a short drive or bike ride from downtown.

Sylván is open seasonally, from 1 April to 30 September. During that window it welcomes visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00, and sometimes on Fridays from 15:00 to 18:00 as well. Outside the regular hours or season, visits can be arranged by phone (377 925 711) or email ([email protected]).

How much does it cost?

Admission is 30 CZK for adults and 15 CZK for the reduced rate (children, students, seniors), while children under six get in free. It's one of the cheaper attractions in the region, which makes it easy to combine with a walk around the surrounding hills or a day spent exploring Plzeň itself.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book a visit to Sylván in advance? No — during the season (April to September) the tower is open without reservation on weekends and public holidays. Booking ahead only matters if you want to visit outside those hours.

How many steps lead to the viewing platform? 122 steps take you up to the platform, which sits at a height of 23 metres on a 70-metre mast.

Can you see anything beyond Plzeň itself from the top? Yes — on clear days the view stretches to the Šumava mountains, the Bohemian Forest, the Brdy hills, and the German peaks of Velký Javor and Hohenbogen.

Is the tower suitable for families with children? Yes, admission is free for children under six and discounted for older children — the only real obstacle is climbing the 122 steps to the top.
