Rákosina

Jistebník, Czechia

About this place

Rákosina is a nature reserve situated in the cadastral territory of Jistebník, within the Poodří Protected Landscape Area in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. Its coordinates are approximately 49.7402°N, 18.1416°E. The reserve stretches between a railway line and the Bezruč and Bažantí ponds, and it forms one of the most extensive terrestrial reed beds anywhere in the Poodří protected landscape.

What makes this reserve distinctive?

Rákosina is far more than a single stand of reeds. Its reed-bed core is bordered by wetlands, meadows, patches of forest and scattered shrubby vegetation, creating a mosaic of habitats packed into a relatively compact area. This diversity is exactly what gives the site its conservation value within Poodří. Several open water surfaces with a permanently shallow water level lie within the reserve, and these pools, ringed by meadows and shrubland, form the heart of the wetland biotope that defines the site.

Along its southern and eastern edge, the reserve is bounded by the Mlýnka mill stream, lined with hardwood floodplain forest. This strip of floodplain woodland adds yet another layer of habitat variety and functions as an ecological corridor linking Rákosina to the surrounding countryside.

What wildlife can be found here?

Rákosina holds significant zoological value. Its reed beds and adjoining wetlands support wetland-dependent invertebrates and amphibians, and the site is a sought-after home for waterfowl and birds tied to reed-bed habitats, which use the area for both nesting and feeding. The combination of dense reed cover, shallow water and shoreline vegetation gives the reserve an outsized role in the local Poodří ecosystem year-round.

Is the reserve currently being restored?

Yes. Rákosina is presently undergoing revitalization work aimed at restoring and reinforcing the partially degraded reed stand, with the goal of drawing rarer bird species associated with this habitat type back to the site. The effort focuses on maintaining and improving water conditions across the reserve, which in turn benefits the quality of the biotope for birds and amphibians alike.

Where exactly is Rákosina located?

The reserve lies in the cadastral area of the village of Jistebník, sandwiched between the railway line and the Bezruč and Bažantí ponds, at the heart of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Its proximity to these fishponds and a network of smaller watercourses means this stretch of Poodří functions as a single, highly valuable wetland system.
