Pomník padlým v 1. světové válce

Věžná, Czechia

About this place

The Monument to the Fallen of World War I (Czech: Pomník padlým v 1. světové válce) stands on the village green (náves) in Věžná, a small village in the Pelhřimov district of the Vysočina region, Czech Republic. Like hundreds of other Czech communities, Věžná honored in this way its residents who died between 1914 and 1918.

Where is the village of Věžná?

Věžná is a tiny village with a current population of 142 (2025 data), located about 17 km west of Pelhřimov, in the Křemešník Highlands. The village's first written record dates to 1358. The municipality consists of two parts: Věžná and Brná. It was once considerably larger — in 1869 it had 370 inhabitants. Between 1980 and 1990 Věžná was part of the municipality of Obrataň, regaining independent status on 1 July 1990.

What else is there to see nearby?

The memorial stands alongside the village's other landmarks — most notably the Church of St. George, whose origins go back to the Middle Ages (also first recorded in 1358), rebuilt into its current Baroque form between 1733 and 1734. Inside, it preserves a late Baroque main altar with a 1764 painting (a copy of a Gothic original), Rococo side altars with paintings by Bedřich Kamarýt from 1864, and numerous stone tombstones from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Next to the church stand the rectory, two stone crosses (one in front of the church, one north of the village), and a small pond.

Is it worth a visit?

The site's significance is mainly symbolic and local — a record of a small rural community's history rather than a major tourist attraction. It's best combined with a visit to the Church of St. George and a walk through the village itself.
