About this place
PolderMAS is a small but deeply personal regional museum in Ouden Doel, right on the banks of the Scheldt, in the municipality of Beveren in Flanders. Its name is a playful nod to two references: the nearby Poldermuseum in Lillo-Fort and Antwerp's MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) — together suggesting a "little MAS of the polders." The museum was founded by archaeologist Benjamin Vergauwe, who personally gathered and catalogued most of its collection over the years.
What can you see at PolderMAS?
The core of the collection consists of archaeological finds recovered from the banks of the Scheldt at low tide — the river has, for centuries, washed up fragments of pottery, bones and other traces of riverside settlement. Alongside these are a substantial fossil collection and one of the more notable clay pipe collections in the region, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of polder communities over the centuries.
The museum's scope, however, goes beyond archaeology. Its holdings also include etchings, old maps, paintings and photographs documenting the changing landscape of this stretch of the Scheldt's left bank — an area radically reshaped in recent decades by the expansion of the Port of Antwerp and large-scale industrial development. The exhibition is rounded out by a collection of old agricultural tools, displayed in the barns of the De Reinaerthoeve farmstead, which forms part of the museum complex.
Why visit Ouden Doel?
Ouden Doel is a small, charming hamlet that has kept its authentic, rural character despite sitting in the shadow of one of Europe's largest ports. Walking through the area, visitors can feel the contrast between the quiet, historic polder landscape and the industrial skyline of the Antwerp port visible in the distance. It is precisely this unusual combination — history, nature and an industrial backdrop — that draws in local history enthusiasts and travellers exploring the wider Doel and Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe area.
In recognition of its contribution to preserving the heritage of the Scheldt's left bank, the museum received a heritage award (erfgoedprijs) from the province of East Flanders in 2016 — a recognition of the years of volunteer effort behind building the collection.
