About this place
Podtrosecká údolí is a nature reserve that curves north and northeast around Trosky Castle, right in the heart of the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj). It was established in 1999 by merging and reshaping two earlier nature reserves located in the Semily and Jičín districts. Covering roughly 143 hectares, it protects one of the most extensive complexes of wetland habitats found anywhere in the Bohemian Paradise. The village of Vyskeř lies right at the edge of the reserve.
What does the landscape of the reserve look like?
The valleys are shaped by ponds and watercourses running through canyon-like gorges lined with sandstone rock formations typical of the wider region. This mix of wet meadows, peat bogs, small pools and rocky slopes gives the area an unusually varied, mosaic-like character packed into a relatively small territory.
What plants and animals live in the valleys?
The reserve protects a rich wetland flora, including buttercups, wood sorrel and round-leaved sundew — an insectivorous plant typical of peat bogs. Among the water and marsh birds found here are mallards and reed-dwelling songbirds such as the reed bunting and the great reed warbler. The combination of such diverse habitats makes the valley an important refuge for regional biodiversity.
Is there a hiking trail through the reserve?
Yes — an educational trail roughly 8 kilometers long, with 10 stops, runs through the scenic valleys beneath Trosky Castle. Information panels at each stop introduce visitors to the nature, geology and history of this part of the Bohemian Paradise, turning the walk into both a scenic hike and a short lesson in local natural history.
What is worth seeing near Vyskeř?
Near the village of Vyskeř, on the edge of the reserve, stands a distinctive rock formation with a Gothic-style pointed arch known as Pekařova brána (Baker's Gate). A seating spot has been arranged at the top of the arch, making it a popular viewpoint and a natural stop for hikers exploring the area around Trosky Castle.
