Podbrdské muzeum

Podbrdské muzeum in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem is a modern museum dedicated to the history of the Podbrdsko region and its most notable figures. It opened on 1 July 2010 inside a reconstructed former Agrostroj factory building right in the historic center of the town, at the foot of Mount Třemšín.

What will you see inside?

The exhibition unfolds across three floors, each covering a different chapter of local history. The ground floor tells the story of everyday life in this poor, rural corner of Bohemia under Třemšín — how people worked and made their living. Here you'll also find a stylized traditional cottage with period farmhouse equipment and interactive tools illustrating old crafts and trades.

The second floor is devoted to the oldest history of Rožmitál, when the region was ruled by the Lords of Rožmitál (Lvové z Rožmitálu). It was this family that produced Johanka of Rožmitál, who became Queen of Bohemia — her story is told in a specially styled "Queen Johana's Chamber." A separate part of the exhibition recalls her brother Jaroslav Lev, displayed alongside a model ship and period replicas.

The top floor is dedicated to Jakub Jan Ryba, a local cantor, composer and writer best known as the author of the famous Czech Christmas Mass (Česká mše vánoční). His life and work form the centerpiece of this section. The museum also houses a gallery and an exhibition of historic automobiles.

Podbrdské muzeum sits in the historic center of Rožmitál pod Třemšínem, so it's easy to find on foot while exploring the town. Cars and bicycles can park directly at the museum entrance. Keep in mind that coaches cannot access the museum grounds, so larger groups should plan to park elsewhere and walk the last stretch.

Children have their own play corner with large wooden building blocks and drawing activities, and in the section on the Lords of Rožmitál kids can dress up as a prince, princess or knight — turning the visit into an interactive adventure rather than just a walk past display cases.
