Planetário do Porto

Porto, Portugal

About this place

Planetário do Porto is a planetarium in Porto, northern Portugal, open to the public since 23 November 1998. It belongs to the Centro Ciência Viva network, Portugal's family of science-outreach centres. The building is shared with the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto, so research and public education sit under one roof. Its coordinates are roughly 41.1506 N, 8.6387 W.

What will you see?

The heart of the venue is a hemispherical dome that serves as both ceiling and projection screen. Visitors sit beneath it and watch the cosmos unfold through image and sound. A modern digital projection system runs on SkyExplorer simulation software, which can recreate the night sky and also play immersive 360-degree films.

How do the sessions work?

The night sky is usually presented live by specialists from the Science Communication Group of the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço. That makes a show more than a film: it is a guided tour led by people who work in astronomy.

What else is on the programme?

Beyond dome sessions, the regular programme includes:

  • educational workshops,
  • astronomical observations,
  • temporary exhibitions,
  • lectures given by astronomers.

The schedule changes over time, so check the planetarium's official website for current listings before you go.

Is it suitable for international visitors?

Yes. During school holidays the planetarium offers one show a day in English on weekdays, aimed especially at tourists. Sessions are otherwise typically in Portuguese, so non-Portuguese speakers should look out for that slot.

What is the mission?

The planetarium aims to promote active citizenship grounded in scientific knowledge. It seeks to inspire and mobilise people through science, foster scientific culture, and invite visitors to share and debate new experiences.

Who is a visit for?

It works well on a rainy day, with children, or as a change of pace from Porto's monuments and wine cellars. Astronomy fans will find lectures and observations, while curious travellers can simply enjoy a show under the dome.
