Plage de la Chambre d'Amour is one of the best-known beaches on the Basque Coast (Côte Basque), sitting in the town of Anglet, between Biarritz and the mouth of the Adour river at Bayonne. Its name — literally "Chamber of Love" — comes from a 17th-century legend about two lovers who drowned in a seaside cave, trapped by the rising tide. That story, more than any spa tradition, turned the spot into one of the region's earliest popular seaside destinations.

Where does the beach's name come from?

According to local legend, Laorens, a young orphaned fisherman, and Saubade, the daughter of a Labourdin farmer, met in secret in a cave at the foot of the cliffs because her father opposed the match. One evening the incoming tide cut off their way back to shore, and both drowned. The cave where they had met their end became known as the Chambre d'Amour. Writer Étienne de Jouy retold the story in his 1817 book "L'Hermite en Province," and when sea bathing became fashionable around 1828, the beach quickly turned into one of the area's favorite places for walks and recreation.

During the summer season (July–August), the beach is patrolled by lifeguards during set hours.

Yes. Reserved parking is available close to the beach entrance, along with a wide boardwalk fitted with a ramp suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Access runs via the seafront promenade and esplanade, and on site there is a dedicated beach wheelchair (a "tiralo") that lets people with reduced mobility bathe in the sea, plus a mat laid across the sand to ease movement to the water.
