About this place
Peñas del Arcipreste de Hita is a rocky Natural Monument of National Interest set in the Guadarrama mountain range, straddling the border between the provinces of Segovia and Madrid, Spain. The protected formation covers roughly 47 hectares and lies within the municipality of El Espinar, near the Puerto de León pass, between the Collado de la Sevillana and the Peña del Cuervo.
Where does the name come from?
The site takes its name from the Archpriest of Hita, a 14th-century clergyman and poet who wrote the "Libro de Buen Amor" (Book of Good Love), one of the most important works of medieval Spanish literature. The rocks were mentioned in that text, which over time turned them into a symbol of the region's literary heritage. In 1930, at the request of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language, the formation was declared a Natural Monument of National Interest to mark the six-hundredth anniversary of the Archpriest's work. The commemorative plaque was unveiled on Sunday, November 23, 1930, in a ceremony organized by the National Parks Board together with the Academy.
What can visitors see there?
The core of the natural monument is a cluster of large granite boulders, characteristic of the Guadarrama landscape, surrounded by pine forest. The accumulation of massive granite blocks creates a striking, rugged scenery typical of the higher reaches of this mountain range. From around the rocks, visitors get sweeping views over the peaks that separate Madrid from Segovia — one of the main reasons hikers and landscape lovers are drawn to the site.
How to get there?
Peñas del Arcipreste de Hita sits within easy reach of El Espinar, a town in the province of Segovia, from where hiking trails lead up to the rock formation. The area around the Puerto de León pass serves as the starting point for several trekking routes of varying difficulty, winding through pine woods and the rocky slopes of the Guadarrama range.
