About this place
Parque Natural de la Sierra Helada (Serra Gelada in Valencian) is a stretch of coastal cliffs spanning the municipalities of Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi and Altea on the Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante. The natural park covers more than 5,000 hectares, a large part of which is marine territory protecting the seabed and its meadows of Posidonia oceanica — a marine plant essential for water clarity and biodiversity in the Mediterranean. The name "Sierra Helada" ("Frozen Range") comes from the pale, frost-like colour of the rock face when seen from a distance.
What makes this park special?
The park's defining feature is a line of cliffs rising more than 300 metres above the sea, among the highest on Spain's Mediterranean coast. The ridge overlooks Benidorm's bay on one side and the quieter coast of l'Alfàs del Pi on the other, with viewpoints stretching out to the Benidorm Island (Illa de Benidorm) on the horizon.
What can you find inside the park?
The protected area combines sea cliffs, fossil dune formations, Mediterranean scrubland and small islets where seabirds nest undisturbed. It is home to the peregrine falcon, one of the fastest predators on the planet, along with petrels and other seabird species that rely on the cliffs' inaccessibility for safe breeding grounds. The surrounding waters host bottlenose dolphins, while the seabed's Posidonia meadows shelter coastal fish, sea urchins and other marine life. On land, plant species adapted to salty, rocky conditions are protected within flora micro-reserves established inside the park's boundaries.
How can you explore Sierra Helada?
The best-known route follows the ridge crossing between Benidorm and the Albir Lighthouse (Faro del Albir) in l'Alfàs del Pi, covering around 8 kilometres and taking roughly 4 hours one way. The trail winds through pine groves and typical Mediterranean vegetation, passing a series of viewpoints over the coastline. Because of steep climbs, little shade along most of the route and considerable elevation change, it is recommended for hikers with good fitness and sure footing — sturdy shoes, water and sun protection are essential, especially in summer. A shorter and easier alternative is the walk to the Albir Lighthouse itself, a mostly flat, paved path along the coast suitable for less experienced visitors.
When is the best time to visit?
Since the ridge trails offer little shade, spring and autumn are the best seasons for longer hikes, when temperatures are milder. In summer, early mornings or late afternoons are recommended to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
