About this place

Panna Maria Pomocná in Dolní Věstonice

Panna Maria Pomocná ("Our Lady the Helper") is a Baroque stone statue of the Virgin Mary and Child standing on a tall pedestal directly behind the presbytery of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Dolní Věstonice, a small wine-growing village in the Pálava region of South Moravia. Modest in size, the statue is nonetheless an integral part of the church's Baroque ensemble and one of the reasons worth pairing a stop here with a visit to the wider Pavlovské vrchy area.

When was the statue made, and who carved it?

The free-standing stone figure of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child dates to 1723. It was carved by Ignác Lengelacher, a sculptor associated with the artistic workshop scene in nearby Mikulov and active in the region during the first quarter of the 18th century. The same sculptor was also responsible for much of the Baroque interior decoration of the adjacent church, meaning the statue and the church's furnishings were conceived as one coherent artistic program rather than added piecemeal over time.

Why does the statue stand behind the church?

Placing the figure on a high pedestal behind the presbytery was a deliberate choice, typical of Baroque sacred architecture. It presented the Virgin Mary as an intercessor visible from outside the building while visually closing off the church's silhouette from the presbytery side, tying architecture and outdoor sculpture into a single, legible composition meant to be read as a whole from the churchyard.

What does the church next to the statue look like?

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, beside which the statue stands, is considerably older than the sculpture itself. Its earliest surviving part — the tower and the Gothic nave — dates back to the first half of the 14th century, and the church is first mentioned in written records in 1359. The building took on its current Baroque form around 1724, when the presbytery with its semicircular end and characteristic oval windows was added. A bell cast in 1545 still hangs in the tower, and since 2019 the church has been undergoing a thorough restoration.

What else is worth knowing about the village?

Dolní Věstonice lies in the Břeclav district, at the heart of the Pálava region, an area known for its vineyards and limestone hills. It was here, at one of the nearby archaeological sites, that the famous Venus of Dolní Věstonice was discovered — one of the oldest known ceramic figurines in the world, dating back tens of thousands of years. The combination of prehistoric heritage and Baroque sacred architecture gives this small village an unusually layered history for its size.

How to plan a visit?

Panna Maria Pomocná stands right next to the church in the center of the village, so it naturally pairs with a look at the church itself and a short walk around Dolní Věstonice. It fits well into a wider Pálava itinerary alongside the local vineyards, the cycling paths around the Nové Mlýny reservoirs, and exhibits dedicated to the region's archaeological finds.
