Ořechov Castle

Ořechov Castle stands in the village of Ořechov, in the Uherské Hradiště District of the Zlín Region, and blends a Renaissance origin with a later Baroque makeover.

How did the castle come to be?

The site was originally home to a medieval stronghold. In the 14th century it belonged to a local noble family tied to Ořechov itself. That fortress was burned during the Czech-Hungarian wars and later rebuilt. The real turning point came in 1571, when the Onšík family of Bílkovice took ownership and converted the old stronghold into a Renaissance residence — the version whose outline is still recognizable today.

What happened to it over the following centuries?

The Thirty Years' War brought another change of hands: the estate passed to the Bishop of Olomouc, Jan Arnošt Platejs z Plattenštejna, and was briefly held by the Velehrad monastery. In 1683 the property was bought by the Magni family, and it was under their ownership that a thorough Baroque reconstruction gave the building much of its present appearance. In 1746, Elizabeth, wife of Rudolf z Magni, had a Baroque chapel built next to the castle.

In 1718 the Velehrad monastery bought the estate back and turned the castle into a summer residence for its abbot. After the monastery was dissolved in 1784, the property passed to a religious fund, changed owners several times, and fell into a period of decline.

Who looked after the castle in the 19th and 20th centuries?

Between 1883 and 1927, the estate belonged to the Catholic Support Society of the Olomouc Archdiocese at Velehrad. From the 1930s onward, ownership passed to the Salesian order, which established an educational institute on the grounds.
