Oblastní galerie Liberec

Liberec, Czechia

About this place

Oblastní galerie Liberec (the Regional Gallery of Liberec) is one of the largest art galleries in the Czech Republic, operating in the northern Bohemian city of Liberec since 1953. The institution collects, studies and displays historical and modern painting, sculpture and graphic art, with a collection of more than 22,000 works originating from Bohemia, Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands and other European countries. For visitors, it ranks among the must-see cultural stops in Liberec, alongside the Ještěd observation tower and the city zoo.

How do you get to the gallery?

The gallery sits in the very centre of Liberec, on Masarykova Street, within easy reach of the main railway station and the city's principal public transport stops. From the train station it is a walk of just over ten minutes, or visitors can take a tram or bus heading toward the town centre. Those arriving by car will find public parking available in the surrounding streets.

What can you see inside?

Oblastní galerie Liberec presents five permanent exhibitions covering European and Czech art across several centuries, from older painting traditions through to 20th- and 21st-century work. These are complemented by a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions, showcasing both regional artists and works of wider European significance. Visitors should plan on spending at least two to three hours to take in all the exhibition halls at a comfortable pace.

The building itself is an attraction in its own right. Since the turn of 2013 and 2014, the gallery has occupied a thoroughly reconstructed former municipal spa building on Masarykova Street, which reopened to the public on 28 February 2014. The conversion of this historic structure into a modern art gallery won the Grand Prix of Architects – National Award for Architecture in 2014, one of the most prestigious professional honours in the Czech Republic. Before that, from the end of the Second World War, the gallery's collections were housed in the villa of Johann Liebieg the Younger, a historic mansion dating from the 1870s that was gradually adapted for exhibition purposes over the following decades.

When is the best time to visit?

The gallery operates year-round, and its bright, climate-controlled interiors work equally well on hot summer days and during the cooler autumn and winter months. It is worth keeping an eye on the schedule of temporary exhibitions, since new shows appear regularly — meaning even repeat visitors will usually find something new to see. Weekday mornings tend to be the quietest time to explore without crowds.

Who is this attraction for?

The gallery appeals to art, architecture and history enthusiasts, but also to families looking for a cultural counterpart to the many outdoor activities available around Liberec and the nearby Jizera Mountains. The modern layout of the interior and the accessible way the collection is presented make the gallery welcoming even for visitors who do not typically seek out art museums.
