About this place
Nad Koupalištěm is a small but botanically significant nature monument sitting just above the village of Štěpánov nad Svratkou, in the Vysočina Region's Žďár nad Sázavou district. The protected site stretches across steep, south to southwest-facing slopes above the left bank of the Svratka River, at an elevation of roughly 360–460 metres above sea level, close to the Sokolí hill (625 m). Its name refers to a nearby swimming spot ("koupaliště") that sits at the foot of the slope, giving hikers a handy landmark when passing through the area.
Why is this site protected?
The reserve preserves a mosaic of former pastures that, after decades of extensive grazing, developed into nutrient-poor grasslands on a quartz bedrock. It was precisely this kind of low-intensity farming — grazing without fertilisation — that allowed vegetation typical of dry and semi-dry meadows to survive here, a habitat type that has become increasingly rare across the Czech agricultural landscape. The site is managed by the Regional Authority of the Vysočina Region, which oversees the conservation of this distinctive habitat.
What species live here?
The reserve's main natural value lies in its orchids. Two strongly endangered species grow on these slopes: the green-winged orchid (Orchis morio) and the burnt orchid (Orchis ustulata). Both are strictly protected by law and serve as reliable indicators of well-preserved xerothermic (dry, heat-loving) grassland. Their continued presence shows that the land has not been chemically fertilised or intensively farmed for years, preserving the delicate balance of soil and microclimate these demanding plants require.
What does the landscape look like?
The slopes falling toward the Svratka River are steep and sun-exposed, favouring the development of xerothermic vegetation — plants adapted to drought and strong sunlight. The quartz bedrock further limits soil fertility, keeping more competitive, nutrient-hungry grasses at bay and allowing the more delicate meadow species to thrive. From here, views open onto the river valley and the surrounding hills of the Vysočina uplands, making the site appealing to landscape lovers as well as botanists.
Can you hike through the reserve?
Yes — a marked hiking trail runs through the protected area, connecting Štěpánov nad Svratkou with Ujčov and continuing on to Nedvědice, home to the well-known Pernštejn Castle. The route lets visitors combine a walk through protected nature with a broader tour of the region, which is why Nad Koupalištěm draws not only botany enthusiasts but also everyday hikers looking for an interesting trail.
