About this place
The Museum of Tourism in Bechyně is the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic, dedicated to the history of hiking, trail marking, and the Club of Czech Tourists (KČT). It occupies a former synagogue building and an adjoining house at Široká 48, right in the historic heart of town.
What will you find inside?
The exhibition traces how tourism developed in the Czech lands and across Europe from the late 19th century onward. Displays include period tourist maps, vintage hiking equipment, an extensive collection of tourist badges, and original trail markings dating back more than a hundred years. A dedicated section covers the tourist magazine that has been published continuously since 1889, along with the stories of people who shaped the Czech hiking movement.
One of the highlights is an interactive electronic map showcasing more than 200 scenic viewpoints across the country, letting visitors explore towers and lookout points well beyond Bechyně itself. The building also hosts a permanent exhibition on the history of the Jewish community in the Bechyně region, a fitting tribute to the structure's origins as a synagogue.
How to get there?
The museum sits in the center of Bechyně at Široká 48 (postal code 391 65), just a short walk from the main square and the town's castle. Bechyně lies in South Bohemia and is reachable by rail from Tábor as well as by regional bus connections.
When should you visit?
The museum operates seasonally. In July and August it's open daily except Mondays, from 9:00 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 17:00. In May, June, September, and October it opens only on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), during the same hours. From November through April the museum is closed. Since opening hours are set anew each year, it's worth checking the current schedule before your visit.
Organized groups can arrange a visit outside regular hours by contacting the museum's caretaker in advance.
Why visit?
This is a destination for anyone who enjoys hiking Czech trails and wants to learn where the country's familiar red, yellow, green, and blue trail markers came from. The museum weaves Bechyně's local history together with the broader story of Czech tourism, while also offering a window into the town's Jewish heritage.
