Diocesan Museum in Pelplin

Pelplin, Poland

About this place

Diocesan Museum in Pelplin is a museum in the town of Pelplin, in Tczew County, known for holding one of the finest collections of medieval art in Poland. It is run by the bishopric of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pelplin and takes its name from Bishop Stanisław Wojciech Okoniewski (1870–1944), the museum’s founder, who died in Lisbon during World War II. Founded in the Second Polish Republic in 1928, during the interwar period, it has been housed in a modern-style building complex since 1988. It is a good place for a focused cultural visit and a close look at rare historical treasures.

Na miejscu można liczyć przede wszystkim na:

  • a strong medieval art collection, presented in a setting that reflects the museum’s long institutional history
  • Poland’s only copy of the Gutenberg Bible, which is among the museum’s most valuable holdings
  • the museum complex itself, which has housed the collections since 1988 and gives the visit a more contemporary architectural frame

For the best experience, plan a calm visit with enough time to see the key exhibits without rushing. It is a solid choice for travelers interested in art, church history, and rare book heritage, especially if you prefer a quieter, more educational stop.
