Museo Municipal de Antequera

Museo Municipal de Antequera is one of Andalusia's most significant municipal museums, housed inside the baroque Palacio de Nájera on Plaza del Coso Viejo in Antequera, Málaga province. Now known officially as the Museo de la Ciudad de Antequera (MVCA), it owes much of its fame to a single Roman bronze: the Efebo de Antequera.

How did the museum come to be?

The institution traces back to 1908, when archaeologist Rodrigo Amador de los Ríos convinced the city council to establish the Museo Arqueológico Municipal. The real turning point came with the discovery of the Efebo de Antequera, a sculpture of international importance that Madrid's Museo Nacional de Arqueología tried to claim for itself. Local residents pushed back and kept the piece in Antequera. In 1966 the museum moved into the Palacio de Nájera, and it was formally inaugurated on 15 March 1972, with the then Prince and Princess of Spain, Juan Carlos and Sofía, in attendance.

The undisputed centerpiece is the Efebo de Antequera, a hollow bronze statue standing 1.54 meters tall, cast in the 1st century AD and depicting a young man. It's regarded as one of the finest Roman bronze sculptures ever recovered from ancient Hispania. Beyond the Efebo, the collection spans Roman-era archaeological finds along with baroque and contemporary art; among the religious works is a sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi by Pedro de Mena, one of Spain's leading baroque sculptors.

What about the building itself?

The Palacio de Nájera dates from the 18th century and stands as a fine example of Andalusian baroque architecture, with a distinctive cut-brick tower, a cloistered inner patio, and an elaborate staircase. Between 2009 and 2011 the complex was expanded with two annexed buildings and renamed Museo de la Ciudad de Antequera, bringing the total floor area to roughly 5,000 square meters, about half of which is exhibition space.

The museum sits in the heart of Antequera's historic center, on Plaza del Coso Viejo, within easy walking distance of the town's other landmarks, such as the Alcazaba fortress and the church of Santa María la Mayor.
