Museo Mares de Cedeira

Museo Mares de Cedeira is a small maritime museum in Cedeira, housed in the Casa do Pescador on Camiño de Area Longa, just steps from the beach and the fishing harbour. It opened on 23 July 2016, a joint project of Cedeira's town council, the local fishermen's guild and the Mares de Cedeira association, built to explain what life at sea has meant for this town — both in the past and for the fleet that still sails out today.

What is inside?

Spread across roughly 320 square metres and several rooms, the museum's core collection is a set of scale models representing boats that once made up Cedeira's fishing fleet. Three full-size vessels back up the models: an old rowing boat, a 1960s motor launch that was originally built as a sailboat, and a traditional Galician dorna. Other rooms hold fishing gear — hooks, lines, pots and nets — plus displays recalling the salting and preserving factories that once processed the local catch.

From D-Day to seashells

A couple of rooms move away from fishing altogether. One holds a piece salvaged from a ship that took part in the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944. Nearby is the "Manuel Suárez" malacology collection, more than 5,000 shells and sea snails gathered from Galicia and around the world, displayed alongside a collection of local marine crustaceans.
