What's the story behind the Eugènia mine?

The Eugènia mine was the largest and most productive mining operation in the whole Priorat basin. The complex was built by the company Minas del Priorato S.A. between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and on site the extracted galena ore was smelted into lead, which was then shipped out as ingots. Around the mine grew a small company settlement — housing and communal facilities for the workers and their families — and part of that built heritage survives today as part of the museum grounds. Extraction continued without interruption until 1972.

The museum itself opened its doors on December 5, 2002. It now belongs to the mNACTEC Territorial System, a network of 24 museums and heritage centres spread across Catalonia that together tell the story of the region's industrialisation.
