Musée L

About this place

Musée L is the university museum of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), located in Louvain-la-Neuve, in the French-speaking province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium. The museum combines a public exhibition space with the role of a research and teaching resource for the university, and its galleries regularly host academic courses in art history, museography and museum mediation, as well as anthropology, literature and multilingual communication.

Where is the museum housed?

Musée L occupies the former Library of Science and Technology, designed by Belgian architect André Jacqmain. The building dates from the early 1970s and was one of the first major structures erected after the university's move to the newly founded town of Louvain-la-Neuve. It is regarded as a notable example of early 1970s Belgian modern architecture. Following its conversion for museum use, the building opened to the public as Musée L in 2017.

What does the collection contain?

The museum's holdings amount to nearly 30,000 objects, spread across several distinct collections. The Antiquity collection comprises around 2,000 items, drawn mainly from the Mediterranean region and documenting the archaeology of ancient Mediterranean cultures. A separate and especially significant holding is the plaster cast collection, begun as early as 1864, which today numbers more than 1,000 pieces reproducing sculptural works spanning antiquity through the 20th century. A third major group consists of folk art and traditional-culture collections, totalling just over 14,000 objects dating from the 16th to the 20th century — everyday items, craftwork and material-culture documentation from the region.

Alongside these three principal collections, the museum also presents artworks and objects of an ethnographic and scientific nature, including historical scientific instruments and inventions, reflecting the interdisciplinary way the collection has been assembled over decades by the university's faculties and institutes.

What role does the museum play for the university?

Musée L is not solely an exhibition venue — it operates in parallel as part of UCLouvain's academic structure. Regular university courses take place within its galleries, and students from a range of disciplines use the collections directly as source material for their studies and research. This dual function, serving both the general public and the university's teaching needs, is one of the features that distinguishes Musée L among university museums in Belgium.
