How do you get there?

Murol sits in the Puy-de-Dôme department, right in the heart of the Sancy massif. The fortress occupies a rise directly above the town centre, so parking is located below it and reaching the entrance means a short but fairly steep climb on foot. Where did this fortress come from?

The earliest defensive structure here dates back to the 12th century, built directly onto a natural basalt rock that served both as foundation and natural shield. The position was ideal for keeping watch over the surrounding roads. In the 14th century the castle was substantially expanded by Guillaume de Sam, who added the keep, a second chapel, and the buildings on the eastern side.

The fortress changed hands in the 15th century, when Jehanne de Murol, sole heir to the family, married Gaspard d'Estaing — from that point the castle belonged to the d'Estaing family. Its later history was less glamorous: the building served as a prison for a time, and during the French Revolution it became a hideout for bandits. Through the 19th century it fell into ruin, with locals stripping stone from the walls for their own construction needs. It was the 1889 listing as a historical monument that ultimately saved the site and set restoration work in motion.
