Motyčanka

Mosty koło Jabłonkowa, Czechia

About this place

Motyčanka is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument located right next to the village of Mosty u Jablunkova, in the Frýdek-Místek district of Czech Silesia, close to the Polish border. The protected area covers just 0.22 hectares, making it one of the smallest legally protected sites in the region, yet its ecological importance far outweighs its modest size.

Where exactly is Motyčanka located?

The reserve sits on gently sloping hillsides in the transition zone between the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and the Jablunkov Depression. This particular geographical boundary, where mountains meet a lowland basin, is what created the distinctive water conditions responsible for shaping the site. The area lies at approximately 49.5006°N, 18.7319°E, within the administrative territory of the municipality of Mosty u Jablunkova.

Why was this site protected?

Motyčanka is a waterlogged meadow that formed as a result of natural water saturation on the gently inclined slopes. This type of ecosystem — a wet meadow with distinctive vegetation — is uncommon in the wider region, which is why it received legal protection as far back as 1990. The site is registered under number 1347. The purpose of the protection is to preserve the entire wetland ecosystem as a habitat for numerous rare, endangered, and protected species of plants and animals, alongside more common species that together form a unique biological mosaic.

Who manages the area?

Motyčanka falls under the administration of the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area, one of the largest and oldest protected landscape areas in the Czech Republic. Within the wider Beskydy PLA there are more than fifty small-scale protected sites, including nature reserves and nature monuments, and Motyčanka is one of these smaller yet meaningful pieces of that conservation network.

What should visitors know about the surrounding area?

While the protected site itself is small and primarily significant for its ecological value rather than tourist infrastructure, its location in a scenic transition zone between mountains and lowland attracts nature lovers and hikers exploring the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. As a protected area, Motyčanka calls for particular care from visitors — walking onto the wet meadow or disturbing the vegetation should be avoided, so as not to upset the delicate balance of this small ecosystem.
