About this place
Moravičanské jezero is a large lake formed inside a former sand and gravel quarry, located between the villages of Moravičany and Mohelnice in the Šumperk district of the Olomouc Region, Czech Republic. The lake covers roughly 108 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 15 metres, making it one of the larger artificial water bodies in the Moravia region.
How did the lake form?
The lake is the result of decades of sand and gravel extraction in the Morava river valley. Once the quarry was flooded, it turned into a lake that has since become both a recreational destination and a valuable natural habitat. Gravel extraction still continues in parts of the surrounding area, running alongside the lake's recreational and conservation roles.
Why does the lake matter for nature?
Part of the area around the lake is protected as a nature reserve, sitting on the northwestern edge of the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area. It is an important ornithological site, home to around 70 nesting bird species, including 10 endangered ones. Somewhat paradoxically, gravel mining has helped create valuable aquatic, wetland, and riparian ecosystems that are now under protection.
Can you swim here?
Yes, swimming is possible, though entirely at your own risk since there is no lifeguard on duty. The north side of the lake has a designated nudist bathing area, while the south side holds a popular public beach. Thanks to the lake's large surface and sandy bottom, the water stays clear even during the hottest summer days. Strong wind can whip up noticeable waves across the open water, which is worth keeping in mind before swimming or doing any water sports.
What else can visitors do here?
Beyond swimming, the lake draws sport anglers and is one of the more popular fishing spots in the region. Water sports are also possible on the lake. The reservoir additionally serves as a drinking water supply for the surrounding area, which limits certain activities within its bounds.
Where can you park and stay?
A free car park with ample capacity sits by the main beach, on the road connecting Moravičany and Mohelnice. Unofficial parking is also available along access roads leading to the water and near the campsites. A small campsite operates near the north beach, close to the main road No. 444 leading to Mohelnice, while the south lake has a campsite offering a wider range of services.
