Mníšek pod Brdy

Mníšek pod Brdy Chateau stands right in the heart of the small town of Mníšek pod Brdy, in the Prague-West District of the Central Bohemian Region, roughly 30 km southwest of Prague. What began as a medieval stronghold has grown into one of the most visited Baroque residences in the Podbrdí region.

How old is the chateau?

The earliest written trace of a fortified seat here dates back to 1355, recorded in Charles IV's law code known as the Majestas Carolina. Archaeological finds suggest an even older origin: a small moated stronghold likely stood on the site already at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

A turning point came in 1487, when the estate passed into the hands of the powerful Mitrovic family, who held it for more than a century and a half. Throughout the 16th century they carried out extensive building works, gradually turning the modest fort into a proper noble residence.

Why does the chateau look Baroque today?

During the Thirty Years' War, in 1639, Swedish troops under General Banér plundered and burned the estate. Its revival came only after 1655, when it was bought by Servác Engel of Engelsfluss, an ennobled Prague burgher of Flemish origin who had made his fortune as a tanner. Between 1656 and 1672 he rebuilt the ruined stronghold into a Baroque residence, giving it much of the appearance it retains today.

Above the town, on the rocky outcrop of Rochota, stands the Baroque pilgrimage complex of Skalka. Its oldest building, the Church of St Mary Magdalene, went up in 1692–1693 to a design by Christoph Dientzenhofer, one of the leading architects of Bohemian Baroque. In the second half of the 18th century, Countess Benedikta Čejková — mother-in-law of the then owner of the Mníšek estate, Count von Unwert — funded a Way of the Cross linking the hermitage to the church: fourteen small chapels built between 1755 and 1762, freely open to visitors year-round. The whole complex has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.

Roughly halfway between Prague and Příbram sits another landmark tied to the estate: the chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Malá Svatá Hora (the "Minor Holy Mountain"), traditionally a resting point for pilgrims heading further on to Svatá Hora near Příbram.
