About this place
The Mlýn v Dolních Počernicích (Dolní Počernice Mill) is a historic watermill in Prague's Dolní Počernice district (Prague 9), standing right on the dam of the Počernický pond, fed by the Rokytka stream. The building forms part of the local château and park complex, alongside the manor houses, church and former brewery, and together with them it is listed as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
Where exactly is the mill located?
The mill stands in the eastern part of the English-style landscape park surrounding the château, directly on the embankment separating the park from the pond. Its coordinates are 50.0881389 N, 14.5817222 E.
How old is the current building?
Milling on this site predates the structure visitors see today. An older mill once stood in the château courtyard on the Rokytka stream but was torn down in 1858. A new building went up in its place, on the pond's dam, in the English Neo-Gothic style fashionable for romantic estate architecture of the period.
What happened to it in the 20th century?
The mill survived as part of the château grounds for over a century, until a fire destroyed the building in 1995. Reconstruction did not begin until four years later, and the most demanding part of the work was the western facade, built from sandstone blocks with relief ornamentation, which was finally restored in 2007.
What is left to see inside?
Inside the mill, remnants of a Francis turbine and parts of the original mechanical drive system are still visible, a reminder of the building's working past as a technical structure rather than a purely decorative one. Since its reconstruction, the mill now houses a restaurant, making it an active stop rather than a silent ruin along the park paths.
Is it worth combining with the pond and park?
Yes. The mill sits right beside the Počernický pond, the largest pond within Prague's city limits at roughly 17 hectares, and next to a seven-hectare château park planted with oaks, maples, limes, ashes, hornbeams, poplars, birches, alders, horse chestnuts and willows. A walk along the pond's embankment naturally passes the mill building, linking the historic architecture with the surrounding landscape into one easy route.
Frequently asked questions
Can you go inside the mill in Dolní Počernice? The building now operates as a restaurant, so the interior is accessible through that business rather than as a standalone sightseeing exhibit.
Is the mill a protected monument? Yes, it is listed together with the château, church and brewery as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
Why does the mill look almost like a small castle building? That romantic appearance comes from the English Neo-Gothic style chosen when it was rebuilt after 1858, matching the aesthetic of the surrounding landscape park.
Is this the original 19th-century structure? The shape and facades date from the 19th century, but the building was badly damaged by fire in 1995 and rebuilt, with the restoration of its most valuable western facade completed in 2007.
How do you get to the mill? It stands in Dolní Počernice, Prague 9, right on the dam of the Počernický pond, within easy reach inside the château park.
