Over the following centuries ownership changed hands several times, until in 1623 the property passed to Albrecht von Wallenstein, one of the most powerful and controversial noblemen of the Thirty Years' War period. From that point on, Mladějov became part of the larger Kost estate, one of Wallenstein's key holdings in the region.

From stronghold to château

The real transformation from a plain fortress into a residential château came much later. In 1738 the estate was renovated on the initiative of Baroness Anna Terezie Unwertová, who had the east and south wings added and the ground floor vaulted. Before 1787 an additional upper storey was built. The classicist appearance the château largely retains today took shape in the second half of the 18th century, and in 1913 the building underwent a neo-baroque refurbishment that gave its façade much of its present decorative character.

Who were its most notable residents?

The name most closely tied to Mladějov remains Albrecht von Wallenstein himself, though the château also played a role in events much later in its history. In 1778, during the War of the Bavarian Succession, the commander of the Austrian forces — the future Emperor Joseph II — set up his headquarters here. That brief episode gives the small château a place in the story of Central European military and diplomatic history well beyond its modest size.
