Mirador del Fraile

Mirador del Fraile is a viewpoint perched above the Duero river canyon, about 6 km from the center of Aldeadávila de la Ribera, in the province of Salamanca. A steel platform cantilevers out nearly 300 meters above the river, letting visitors look straight down into the granite gorge that has long marked the natural border between Spain and Portugal.

How do you get there?

From Aldeadávila de la Ribera, take the road toward Merendero del Llano de la Bodega, then continue about 600 more meters to reach the viewpoint itself. You can drive almost all the way to the platform — from the small parking area, a short, well-marked path leads the rest of the way. The site sits within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, so it pairs well with a visit to the region's other lookout points, including those near the Aldeadávila dam.

What will you see?

The current platform was installed in 2021 and opened to the public in April 2022, replacing an earlier, simpler viewpoint on the same spot. It extends 12.8 meters as a cantilever, measuring 2.4 meters wide at the base and narrowing to 1.5 meters at the tip. Metal railings run along the edges, and a section of the floor is fitted with safety glass — you can look straight down through it at the Duero flowing hundreds of meters below.

From the platform you can take in the sheer granite walls of the canyon, the Aldeadávila reservoir, and, further off, the terrain already crossing into Portuguese territory. It's one of the most recognizable views in the whole Arribes del Duero region, popular with landscape photographers and anyone who simply wants to feel the scale of this river gorge.

Where does the name come from?

The name "Mirador del Fraile" (Friar's Viewpoint) comes from a local story tied to a rock known as "la silla del fraile" (the friar's chair), from which the valley was once admired. Franciscan monks are said to have tended a garden nearby, and that connection to religious life stuck with the place's name over time.

The viewpoint is open all year, but spring and autumn tend to offer the clearest air and best light for taking in the canyon. Summer afternoons can turn hazy and hot, which cuts down visibility deep into the gorge.
