Mirador de Cal Beitas

Mirador de Cal Beitas is a wooden observation tower in el Prat de Llobregat, rising over the wetlands of the Llobregat Delta. Built in 1993, it has become one of the standard stops for anyone wanting to see the delta from above.

What is this place?

The Llobregat Delta is naturally flat, with no hills or ridges from which to take in its lagoons, reed beds, and coastal vegetation. Architect Imma Jansana Ferrer designed the tower specifically to give visitors the vantage point the landscape itself doesn't offer. The structure is a circular tower built around a spiral staircase, with a radial portico supporting a circular viewing balcony 3.20 meters above the ground. It's built from bolondo wood, chosen for its resistance to moisture and salt — a practical necessity in the delta's marine climate, where ordinary timber would deteriorate quickly.

What will you see from up there?

From the balcony you look out over the Estany de Ca l'Arana lagoon and the surrounding Pineda de Ca l'Arana, a pine grove that separates the water from the nearby beach. This is one of the parts of the delta where the view still feels open — mostly water, reeds, and greenery, without the port and airport infrastructure that dominates other stretches.

The Llobregat Delta sits on a migratory route linking northern Europe and Africa, drawing more than 350 bird species over the course of a year. From the tower, herons, cormorants, ducks, and coots are the easiest to spot, and with a bit of patience you can also pick out waders in the wetter areas or seabirds closer to the beach. Ospreys have been recorded here too, although they don't nest in the area.

Mirador de Cal Beitas sits along a circular walking route that starts at the Cal Tet car park, next to Camí de Cal Tet. It's roughly 3.2 km into that route and neighbors other towers in the same network — Mirador de Cal Lluquer, Mirador de Cal Malet, and Mirador de la Desembocadura — so it's easy to plan a longer walk linking several viewpoints in one outing. The L9S metro line serves the general area, though the final stretch through the delta has to be covered on foot or by bike.

When should you visit?

Migration seasons — spring and autumn — bring the widest variety of species and are the best time for birdwatching. Summers get hot and sunny, and since there's little shade right around the tower itself, water and sun protection are worth bringing. Winter is quieter but still active ornithologically, with wintering ducks and coots sticking around the lagoons throughout the season.
