Mirador de Alhama

Mirador de Alhama is a viewpoint on the road into the town of Alhama de Granada, in the Granada province of Andalusia, southern Spain.

What else is worth seeing in town?

Once you head down into the centre, the Church of la Encarnación is worth a visit — built between 1505 and 1560 on the site of a former mosque, it is considered one of the first consecrated churches in the old Kingdom of Granada. The old Moorish quarter also holds the Mazmorras, underground chambers once used as stores or prisons, reached down a steep path known locally as the "devil's staircase," which drops almost to the foot of the gorge. A short walk from the church is a second viewpoint, the Mirador de los Tajos, where the canyon walls — up to 80 metres high in places — are visible up close.

When should you visit?

Early morning or late afternoon give the best light for photographing the town and the gorge below, once the sun is off its midday high. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for exploring on foot, since summers in this part of Andalusia get hot enough to make the longer walk toward Játar uncomfortable.
