Milíčovský les a rybníky

Praga, Czechia

About this place

Milíčovský les a rybníky (Milíčov Forest and Ponds) is a nature reserve spanning nearly 82 hectares on the southeastern edge of Prague, wedged between the Jižní Město housing estate and the D1 motorway, close to the Kateřinky area of Prague-Újezd. It stands out as one of the largest relatively natural forest-and-wetland complexes still found within the city limits, drawing both local residents and nature enthusiasts from across Prague.

Why is this site protected?

The area was declared a nature monument (přírodní památka) in 1988 to safeguard valuable plant and animal communities typical of deciduous forest and wetland habitats. It also forms part of the Natura 2000 network under the site name "Milíčovský les". One specific reason behind its protected status is the presence of the great capricorn beetle (Cerambyx cerdo), a rare longhorn beetle that occurs only occasionally elsewhere in the Czech Republic.

What does the landscape look like?

The terrain is mostly flat with gentle undulations, covered by natural deciduous woodland dominated by alder, birch and willow, along with a rich shrub understorey. Meadows break up the forest cover, adding to the area's habitat diversity. At the heart of the reserve lie three ponds — Milíčovský rybník, Homolka and Kančík — which together form a water system that is central to the site's ecological value.

What wildlife can be found here?

The ponds and the damper stretches of forest serve as an important refuge for amphibians, while the woodland itself provides nesting grounds for numerous bird species. This combination of forest and wetland fauna, together with the rare beetle mentioned above, is what justified granting the area formal protection.

Can visitors use it for recreation?

Yes — a green-marked hiking trail runs through the forest, and the route is equipped with benches, playgrounds and small pavilions, making it a welcoming spot for families. Cyclists also frequent the area, though as a protected nature site it comes with rules limiting interference with the local flora and fauna.

How to get there?

Milíčovský les a rybníky sits on the southeastern fringe of Prague, between the Jižní Město estate and the D1 motorway, near Kateřinky. Because the reserve borders directly onto the Jižní Město residential district, it is easily reached on foot or by bike from nearby metro stations on Line C.

Frequently asked questions
