Míchova skála

Míchova skála

Řásná, Czechia

About this place

Míchova skála is a small but striking nature monument in the Jihlava Hills, within the municipality of Řásná in the Jihlava District of the Czech Republic. It consists of two granite rock towers roughly 13 meters tall, rising alone within the forest near the popular Velký Pařezitý pond.

How did this rock formation form?

Míchova skála owes its unusual, well-preserved shape to a multi-stage weathering history recorded in the fine- to medium-grained two-mica granite that makes up the summit areas of the Jihlava Hills. The rock was first shaped by tropical chemical weathering during the Tertiary period, and later sculpted further by intense frost weathering under the periglacial conditions of the Pleistocene. The result is a distinctive pair of steep rock towers, considered one of the best-preserved examples of this kind of layered weathering process in the region.

Why is it protected as a nature monument?

Because of its geological significance, Míchova skála was declared a protected nature monument in 1984. The protected area is small, covering just 0.2 hectares directly around the rock formation itself. The designation exists to safeguard not only the rock towers but also the rare geomorphological process they represent, along with the surrounding vegetation.

Can visitors climb the rock?

For years, the granite towers attracted rock climbers, who used the site as a training ground for its steep faces. However, heavy climbing and visitor traffic began to damage both the rock and the sensitive terrain at its base. As a result, the climbing exception that had allowed this activity was revoked in 1997, and today Míchova skála is fully protected, with climbing no longer permitted.

How do you get to Míchova skála?

The easiest way to reach the site is via a green-marked hiking trail starting from Velký Pařezitý pond, a short walk of about 1.5 kilometers. The route passes through quiet, forested terrain typical of the Jihlava Hills, making it an accessible outing even for visitors who aren't used to longer mountain hikes.

What else should you know before visiting?

Míchova skála lies northeast of Javořice, the highest peak in the Jihlava Hills, making it a natural stop for anyone exploring longer routes through the range. The site appeals especially to visitors interested in geology and quieter, less-crowded walking trails — a modest rock formation with a surprisingly long story written into its stone.
