About this place
Městský park (the town park) sits on Riegrova street in Šlapanice, a small town right next to Brno in the South Moravian Region. It is owned and managed by the town, and its present form grew out of a much older chateau garden.
Where did the park come from?
The ground the park now occupies once served as the front garden of the local chateau. The chateau's own history goes back to 1753, when Jindřich Kajetán Blümegen, then the highest-ranking administrator of Moravia and Silesia, acquired the so-called Schwanenfeld court. Soon after, he had a single-storey rococo-style building put up there, which he used as his country residence.
In 1899 the municipality of Šlapanice bought the chateau together with its adjoining buildings, front garden and park. The chateau building has served school purposes ever since — lessons there began after the summer break of 1901 — while the former chateau garden became a public town park.
What makes this park stand out?
What sets Městský park apart is mainly its location: it lies close to the town centre while bordering directly on the natural monuments of Andělka and Čertovka. That combination of town greenery next to protected nature makes it one of the most popular and most frequently used recreational spots in Šlapanice, drawing both locals looking for a walk or a rest and visitors heading further toward the nearby protected areas.
What happens in the park?
The park also doubles as a cultural venue. Its best-known event is the folk festival Šlapanické slavnosti, held together with a reunion of the town's native residents and its jubilarians — an occasion that brings together current inhabitants and people with long-standing ties to Šlapanice. The grounds can also be rented for private events: under the price list in force since March 2025, the rental fee is 15,000 CZK plus a refundable 10,000 CZK deposit, and any event with music must end by 9 pm at the latest. Organisers are also required to provide portable toilets for attendees.
Is the park currently being renovated?
Yes, the park is going through a gradual revitalisation. Old and unsuitable trees and shrubs have been cleared away and replaced with new plantings. Paved areas and staircases are being rebuilt, and the paths are being renewed and extended with scenic recreational trails and several viewing terraces. The first phase of the works already removed the steps of the old open-air amphitheatre and replaced them with seating made of oak blocks and steel chairs, giving that part of the park a more intimate space for resting and gathering.
