Měnínská brána

Měnín Gate (Měnínská brána) is the only surviving city gate of old Brno, standing on Měnínská street right in the historic centre. Brno once had five such gates — Běhounská, Brněnská, Měnínská, Veselá and Židovská — but only this one made it into the present day, making it the most tangible remnant of the city's medieval fortifications.

What is the history behind the gate?

The first written record of Měnín Gate dates back to 1293, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in Brno. Around 1500 the gate underwent a major rebuild, taking on the form that largely defines its appearance today. It was reportedly the tallest of all Brno's gates, topped with a Renaissance helm roof and a lantern, and by the end of the 16th century a tower clock had been added.

The gate lost its original defensive purpose in the mid-17th century, when a large bastion was built in front of it as part of Brno's Baroque fortification system — a response to the lessons of the Thirty Years' War era. Another major change came in 1839, when the gate was reduced by one floor and converted for residential use, losing much of its earlier grandeur.

The 20th century was unkind to the building: in 1945, during the final stages of World War II, it suffered serious damage from artillery fire. A thorough renovation followed only in 1978–1982, after which the gate was handed over to the Brno City Museum.

What can visitors find there today?

From 2010, Měnín Gate housed a Toy Museum, popular with families visiting the city. It closed in 2020 due to the building's deteriorating condition. Since April 2025, the gate has been undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction, expected to be completed in 2027, after which it is planned to reopen as a new exhibition space run by the Brno City Museum.

How do you get to Měnín Gate?

The gate stands on Měnínská street, just a few minutes' walk from Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) and Brno's main train station. It's an easy stop to combine with other landmarks of the historic centre — a short walk takes you to the Zelný trh vegetable market or towards the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Because reconstruction work is ongoing, it's worth checking current access before visiting, as the interior may be temporarily closed to the public during construction.

The ideal time to see the gate properly will be once reconstruction wraps up around 2027, when the new Brno City Museum exhibition is set to open. Until then, the building is best appreciated from the outside, as part of a walk through Brno's historic core — a route that's especially enjoyable in the warmer months, when the surrounding streets and squares are at their liveliest.
