About this place
Medlánecké kopce is a small nature reserve on the northern edge of Brno, made up of two low hills rising directly above the dense residential districts of Medlánky and Královo Pole. The area has been protected since 1988 for its unusually rich steppe plant and insect communities, uncommon for this part of the Czech Republic.
Where exactly are the hills located?
The reserve consists of two summits forming the northern continuation of the Palackého vrch ridge. The smaller, north-eastern Medlánecký kopec (322 m) rises on the western edge of Medlánky, while the larger, south-western Střelecký kopec (338 m) lies at the northern end of Královo Pole. Despite their modest height, both hills stand out clearly from the surrounding urban development and offer wide views over the area.
Why was this particular site protected?
The reserve was established to safeguard warmth-loving steppe flora and fauna that are rare across the wider region. The slopes host the great pasque flower, which blooms in early spring with distinctive purple flowers, along with the northernmost known Czech population of narrow-leaved sedge. Field blackthorn and a spotted carnation species (locally referred to as the "Pontederia carnation") also grow here. This combination makes Medlánecké kopce one of the more significant refuges for steppe vegetation in the region, despite sitting right next to densely populated neighborhoods.
What draws visitors here?
The main appeal is the contrast between easy accessibility and a landscape that feels nothing like the surrounding city. Open steppe grasslands dotted with flowering plants, wide unobstructed spaces, and viewpoints over Brno and the neighboring hills make it a popular destination for walks and short hikes among residents of the nearby districts. People come here mainly for the nature and the views rather than for any built infrastructure — there are no major visitor facilities, and the main reason to visit is simply the chance to experience rare vegetation just steps from the city.
When is the best time to visit?
Early spring is the most rewarding period, when the pasque flower and other steppe species bloom, covering the hills in patches of purple and white. Summer is good for observing the insects associated with steppe grasslands, and the open terrain provides good viewing conditions for most of the year.
