Makovica

About this place

Makovica is a forested mountain peak rising to 981 m above sea level in the Slánske vrchy (also known as the Slanec–Tokaj Mountains) in northeastern Slovakia. Sitting in the central section of the range, the summit functions as an important hiking junction and a regional landmark, even though the peak itself is covered in dense forest and does not offer an open panoramic view.

What stands on the summit?

The top of Makovica is occupied by a cluster of telecommunications structures — several tall towers and masts used by radio and television broadcasters, mobile network operators, and the military. This infrastructure is visible from a considerable distance and has become one of the defining features of this part of the Slánske vrchy, underlining the mountain's elevated, strategically useful position above the surrounding terrain.

How do you reach the top?

The main starting point for climbing Makovica is the small village of Mudrovce, from which an unmarked path leads through the forest to the summit. From the top, routes branch off in several directions: northwest toward Menší vrch and Ordanky, southeast via Vyžník toward Herľany, and newer trail sections heading toward Rokytová and other nearby peaks. This makes Makovica a natural meeting point for hikers exploring the range. A road with an accompanying cycling route also leads to the summit from the village of Kecerovce.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

Along the route from Mudrovce lie the ruins of Lipovec Castle, built in the 13th century by the Abovci noble family — a historical stop that hikers can combine with the ascent of Makovica. Not far away is Herľany, best known for the Herľany Geyser, one of the region's notable natural attractions. Among the surrounding hills, Rankovské skaly (780 m) stands out as a scenic viewpoint along one of the trails, offering views over the Torysa valley as well as the Slánske and Zemplínske highlands.

Where exactly is Makovica located?

The peak lies within the Slánske vrchy, a mountain range stretching across northeastern Slovakia, close to villages such as Mudrovce, Kecerovce, Kecerovský Lipovec, and Herľany. The area is characterized by gently rolling, densely forested terrain typical of the moderate-elevation mountain ranges of eastern Slovakia.
