Maison forte de Loche is a medieval fortified house standing in the center of Magland, a small town in the Haute-Savoie department at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. Where does this building come from?

The story goes back to the 14th century. A "fortis domus" — a fortified house — belonging to the Loche family is already recorded in 1358, and it's this family name that stuck to the building ever since. In 1372, an important charter was drawn up here settling grazing rights between the commoners of Magland and the Chartreuse du Reposoir monastery, a dispute that shows just how central the Loche family was to local affairs.

The family carried real weight in the region. Toward the end of the 15th century, Jean de Loche served as co-lord of Servoz and as bailli (a judicial and administrative officer) of Faucigny, one of Savoy's historic districts. The family's standing across generations later left its mark on the building's decoration, still visible today.

In the 20th century the building changed use and served for a while as an inn, which likely helped protect it from demolition and kept its historic fabric intact. Today it belongs to the municipality of Magland.
