Magnetovec – Skalní hřib

Valtířov, Czechia

About this place

Magnetovec – Skalní hřib is one of the most unusual rock formations in the Czech Central Highlands (České středohoří), tucked away in a wooded, hard-to-reach area south of the village of Velké Březno in the Ústí nad Labem district. While the Magnetovec summit itself reaches 521 metres above sea level, the real draw isn't the peak — it's the strange mushroom-shaped rock standing just below it.

How did this stone mushroom form?

The formation is the result of two overlapping basanite lava flows that once covered this volcanically active corner of Bohemia. The lower layer of lava turned out to be more porous and far more vulnerable to weathering than the layer above it. Over thousands of years, erosion exploited that difference: the softer base wore away faster, while the harder cap on top remained largely intact. The result is a striking shape — a narrow "stem" supporting a wide, heavy "cap." The whole structure stands roughly 8 metres tall, making it one of the more impressive rock mushrooms of its kind in the region.

Why is the site protected?

Because of its exceptional geological value, Magnetovec – Skalní hřib holds the status of a natural monument (přírodní památka) and falls within the Czech Central Highlands Protected Landscape Area (CHKO České středohoří). This region is famous for its volcanic landforms — hills, rocky spires and isolated outcrops shaped by Tertiary-period volcanic activity — yet a rock mushroom of this scale is still a rarity here.

How to get to Magnetovec

The site sits well away from the main hiking routes, which is both a challenge and an advantage: visitors get to enjoy a quiet, uncrowded experience far from the busier viewpoints elsewhere in the region. The most convenient approach follows the green-marked hiking trail from Velké Březno. An alternative is an unmarked path from the direction of Byňov. Both routes cross forested terrain that is partly steep and rocky, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

What to know before visiting

Because the area is officially protected, visitors are expected to stay on marked paths and avoid disturbing the rock formation itself. The surrounding forests of the Czech Central Highlands also open up onto scenic views of the Elbe valley and neighbouring volcanic hills, making the hike to Magnetovec a good excuse for a longer walk through this quieter corner of the protected landscape area.
