About this place

Madeira Whale Museum (Museu da Baleia) in Caniçal

The Madeira Whale Museum, known locally as Museu da Baleia, stands in Caniçal, in the municipality of Machico on the eastern tip of Madeira. It tells the story of four decades of whaling in the archipelago and introduces the marine mammals that swim in the waters around the island today.

Why visit this museum?

It covers a lesser-known chapter of Madeira's past. Whaling ran here from 1941 to 1981 and shaped daily life in Caniçal in particular. Today the exhibition pairs the memory of that trade with a message about protecting the ocean, so the visit is both historical and about nature.

How did the museum begin?

It opened to visitors on 28 May 1990 in a former fish market building, under the name Municipal Whale Museum. The aim was to keep the memory of the whaling era alive. The permanent exhibitions in their current, much larger form opened in September 2011 after a major expansion.

What is on display?

The exhibition covers more than 1,000 m² across two rooms.

  • The Whaling Room. It walks through the stages of the old industry: the network of coastal lookouts, hunting techniques and the processing factory. You will find objects, archive photos, films and multimedia kiosks, plus the whaling fleet, its crews and Madeira's place in world whaling.
  • The ocean room. A journey back to the present in which visitors "dive" into the sea. Life-size models of whales, dolphins and other sea creatures sit alongside interactive displays.

Who is it for?

Families with children, thanks to the models and interactive screens, as well as history and nature lovers. It pairs well with a whale and dolphin watching trip, since it helps you understand which species live nearby.
