Luh u Telče

Telcz, Czechia

About this place

Luh u Telče is a small but ecologically remarkable nature reserve located right next to the town of Telč, in the Jihlava district of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Covering 14.36 hectares, the protected area was established in 1984 and sits at an elevation of 523 to 554 meters above sea level. It is managed by the Regional Authority of the Vysočina Region.

What makes this forest unusual?

Luh u Telče protects a type of alluvial forest that is rare at this elevation and in this climatic zone. The reserve falls within the fir-beech vegetation belt, yet it preserves a forest community more typically associated with river floodplains at much lower altitudes. This combination — floodplain-type woodland surviving in the harsher conditions of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands — is what gives the site its scientific value.

The land once served as a pheasantry, a history still reflected in parts of the forest's structure. Today it stands as a unique example of broad-leaved forest at higher elevations, often described as a foothill alluvial forest — a transitional form between lowland floodplain woods and upland forest communities.

What grows and lives here?

The forest is composed mainly of oak, ash, linden, and maple, species typical of fertile, moisture-rich deciduous habitats. This varied tree composition supports a rich bird population, and the reserve is also valued for its ornithological importance. Species recorded in the area include blue tits, robins, and woodpeckers, all of which benefit from the mature stands and deadwood found throughout the reserve.

The diversity of the understory and ground vegetation, characteristic of alluvial forests, further enriches the ecosystem, providing habitat for numerous herbaceous plant species tied to damp, nutrient-rich soils.

Visiting Luh u Telče

The reserve lies right on the outskirts of Telč, a town best known for its UNESCO-listed historic center, Renaissance chateau, and colorful arcaded houses. Because of this proximity, Luh u Telče makes a natural addition to a visit to the town — a quiet, green counterpoint for travelers who want to combine sightseeing with a short walk through protected woodland.

As with any nature reserve, visitors should stick to marked paths, avoid picking plants, and refrain from disturbing wildlife, particularly during the bird breeding season.
