Luční potok

Jesenice, Czechia

About this place

Luční potok is a small nature reserve located near the village of Jesenice in the Rakovník district of western Bohemia, Czech Republic. Established in 2000, it forms one of several small protected enclaves that together make up the Jesenicko Nature Park, a larger landscape complex covering the western part of the Rakovník district.

Why was this area protected?

The reserve was created to safeguard a landscape of high natural value featuring a diverse mosaic of plant and animal communities, including several critically endangered and endangered species. The valley of the Luční brook, together with the surrounding wet meadows and scrubland, creates a varied habitat structure that is unusually rich for such a compact area.

What plants grow here?

The reserve is known for its wealth of meadow and orchid species. Among the notable plants found here are the martagon lily (Lilium martagon), cross gentian (Gentiana cruciata), field scabious (Knautia arvensis), lesser butterfly orchid (Platanthera bifolia), round-headed rampion (Phyteuma orbiculare), globeflower (Trollius europaeus), broad-leaved marsh orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis), and cowslip (Primula veris). The presence of so many species with specific moisture and soil requirements reflects the good condition of the meadow habitats preserved along the brook valley.

Which animals live in the reserve?

Among the birds recorded here are the Eurasian wryneck (Jynx torquilla), the golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus), and the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) — species considered indicators of well-preserved meadow-scrub mosaics. The river warbler (Locustella fluviatilis) can also be heard, its distinctive, monotonous song carrying over the water in the evenings. Amphibians are represented by the green toad (Bufotes viridis), reptiles by the grass snake (Natrix natrix), and among mammals the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) stands out as a species protected across Europe.

What is the Jesenicko Nature Park?

The Luční potok reserve is one of several small-scale protected sites forming part of the Jesenicko Nature Park, which spans the western portion of the Rakovník district. Neighbouring protected sites include the Rybníčky u Podbořánek reserve and the Soseňský lom, Prameny Javornice, and Plaviště natural monuments. Together they form a network of high-value natural enclaves scattered across the region's agricultural landscape.
