Luč Loučovice

Loučovice, Czechia

About this place

Luč is a 933-metre summit in the Šumava mountains, rising directly above the village of Loučovice, less than 2 km from the Lipno dam. Also known by its German name Kien (Hirschberg), the hill forms a national nature reserve together with the neighboring Čertova stěna, protecting one of the wilder corners of this part of the Šumava range.

What will you see at the top?

The summit of Luč is marked by a small rock crowned with a cross — a distinctive landmark, though the peak itself is wooded and offers no open view over the surrounding countryside. The real draw lies elsewhere: a striking granite massif, rocky outcrops, and pockets of near-untouched natural forest with boulder fields that have survived here in remarkably original condition. The Vltava river wraps around the hill on three sides — east, south, and west — giving Luč something of the feel of a rocky island held in the river's bend.

Several granite boulders on the slopes are fitted with climbing bolts, making the spot a small, low-key climbing destination in the Lipno area — popular with local climbers looking for rope climbing away from the crowds.

How to get there?

The most convenient approach follows a blue-marked hiking trail from the railway station in Loučovice — roughly 2.4 km with 255 metres of elevation gain, a brisk but manageable walk of under an hour for most visitors. The trail continues along the ridges of the massif, so a visit to Luč can easily be extended into a longer loop through the surrounding hills.

Because Loučovice sits so close to Lipno, a trip up Luč pairs naturally with time at the lake — swimming and boating in summer, or nearby ski runs in winter.

When to visit?

Given the forested summit and rocky terrain, spring through autumn is the best window, when trails are dry and the forest is at its most scenic. Summer visitors appreciate the dense old-growth canopy, which keeps the climb pleasantly shaded even on hot days. In winter, the final approach can be tricky where rocks near the summit ice over, so sturdy footwear is worth packing.
