Louky v Jeníkově

Jeníkov, Czechia

About this place

Louky v Jeníkově is a 27.75-hectare nature reserve located southeast of the village of Jeníkov, roughly five kilometres from the town of Hlinsko in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic. The site was granted protected status in 1990 to preserve a well-preserved complex of wet peat meadow, wetland and reed plant communities that developed on the site of former fishponds below the village.

What does the landscape look like?

Louky v Jeníkově sits in a shallow depression once occupied by a chain of ponds. After the ponds silted up and disappeared, extensive reed beds and sedge-dominated peat meadow vegetation took their place, gradually transitioning into moisture-loving tall-herb communities. Scattered stands of alder, birch and willow appear across parts of the site — tree species typical of waterlogged Central European habitats. This mosaic of vegetation types makes the reserve a valuable remnant of the wider Žďárské vrchy (Žďár Hills) landscape, preserved despite the intensive agricultural use of the surrounding countryside.

Which species live here?

The wet meadows and marshland of Louky v Jeníkově provide habitat for numerous amphibians, including brown and green frogs and common toads, which rely on standing water and dense bankside vegetation for breeding. The open meadows themselves are home to the common (viviparous) lizard and the common European adder, species characteristic of damp, extensively managed grassland. The reserve also serves as breeding ground for wetland and meadow birds such as the common snipe, meadow pipit, corn bunting and red-backed shrike. The presence of this range of species points to the high ecological value and habitat diversity contained within a relatively small protected area.

Who takes care of the site?

Keeping the peat meadows open requires ongoing human intervention — without regular mowing, the land would quickly become overgrown with reeds and scrub, causing the loss of these valuable plant communities. In recent years, manual mowing across the reserve has been carried out by conservationists from the "krajina" (Landscape) association, an organisation active in nature conservation work throughout the Vysočina region. This kind of extensive, traditional meadow management is essential for maintaining habitat for species dependent on open, wet grassland.

Why visit Louky v Jeníkově?

The site appeals mainly to nature lovers, birdwatchers and anyone interested in wetland ecology rather than to visitors seeking typical tourist infrastructure — there are no facilities here, only an authentic fragment of the landscape that once covered much of the valleys of the Žďár Hills. Walking along the edges of the reserve reveals the gradual transitions between vegetation types, from reed beds through sedge meadows to scattered tree stands, and with a little patience, visitors may spot some of the animal species the reserve was established to protect.
