Linhartovy Castle

Linhartovy Castle stands in the village of Linhartovy, now part of the town of Město Albrechtice, in the Bruntál district of the Moravian-Silesian Region, roughly ten kilometres from Krnov.

What stood here before the castle?

The site was originally home to a moated fortress dating back to the end of the 14th century. In 1578 the estate passed to Kateřina Kravařová of Šlovice, wife of Václav Haugvic of Biskupice, and it was Haugvic who, in the second half of the 16th century, turned the old stronghold into a Renaissance residence: a square, multi-storey building with a courtyard once ringed by arcades and a round corner tower that still carries traces of Renaissance sgraffito.

How did the Thirty Years' War change the estate?

The conflict left the Linhartovy estate badly damaged. In 1658 the last Haugvic owner, Ladislav Alois, sold the ruined property to Maxmilián Sedlnický of Choltice, whose family carried out a thorough rebuilding that gave the castle much of the Baroque appearance it still shows today, both inside and out.

Is there a park to visit?

Yes. A formal French-style garden was laid out alongside the new Baroque castle, and during the 19th century it was reshaped into a landscape park in the English manner. That park still surrounds the building and is one of the main reasons visitors come to walk the grounds.

Who owned the castle after the Sedlnický family?

In 1892 the wealthy Wenzelides family of Krnov bought the estate, and in 1930 ownership passed to the Wüllersdorf-Urbair family. The property later fell into decline until 2001, when it became the property of the town of Město Albrechtice.

What is happening at the castle now?

Since taking ownership, the town has carried out gradual restoration work, partly funded through EU grants, aiming to turn the castle into a local cultural venue. Over the years it has hosted exhibitions, concerts, markets, theatre performances and weddings. At present the building is closed to visitors while reconstruction continues, and anyone planning a visit should check directly with the castle administration for the current schedule and reopening date.
