Libouň Castle

Libouň Castle is a Baroque manor house in the village of Libouň in the Czech Republic, built on a rocky outcrop on the site of an earlier medieval fortified stronghold.

How old is the settlement at Libouň?

The story of this place goes back to the second half of the 12th century and is closely tied to the Premonstratensian convent at Louňovice pod Blaníkem, founded in 1149. Around that time a Romanesque rotunda was built here, and next to it a fortified stronghold (tvrz) together with a manorial farmstead. The stronghold was inhabited by so-called nápravníci — tenants obliged to perform specific services for the convent in exchange for living on its land.

By the second half of the 14th century, members of the powerful lords of Dubé had begun taking over property that once belonged to the convent. Records from 1362 mention the brothers Ondřej Roháč z Dubé and Beneš Libún, whose name many local historians link to the village's own. For the following centuries the stronghold changed hands repeatedly among noble families, following the shifting fortunes of the surrounding estates.

When did the current castle take shape?

The real architectural transformation came only at the end of the 17th century. In 1690, Václav Malovec z Malovic rebuilt the old stone stronghold into a masonry castle with stylistic touches of the late Renaissance, although the building as a whole is usually described as Baroque. What makes the site distinctive is its position directly on a rock outcrop — the structure appears to grow straight out of the stone, giving it the defensive, picturesque silhouette still visible today.

The castle's history was far from peaceful, though. A fire in 1801 destroyed much of the building, and its owners never restored it to its original size. Part of the complex was converted into a granary and utility spaces, and for a long stretch the castle lost its residential role, serving mainly the needs of the farmstead.

What can you see at Libouň today?

Since 2013 the castle has been open to visitors, after decades as a private, largely agricultural property. The complex today includes the main castle building together with the former Podzámčí outbuildings, a castle park with a cascading fountain, a pond, and a smaller water feature. In summer, guests can use an outdoor saltwater pool measuring 10 by 5 metres.

On site there is a restaurant serving traditional Czech cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients. The castle is also a popular wedding venue, hosting complete ceremonies and receptions, with accommodation for wedding guests available either in the Podzámčí rooms or in the more upscale castle apartments.

How to get there and when to visit?

Libouň lies in the Central Bohemian Region, close to Vlašim, making it a convenient day-trip destination from Prague or a stop on a longer tour of central Bohemian castles. Summer is the best time to visit, when the outdoor pool is open and the castle park looks its best. It is worth checking current visiting arrangements in advance, since the castle also operates as a hotel and event venue and parts of the grounds may be reserved for private functions.
