Lenešice Castle

Lenešice Castle is a Renaissance-turned-Baroque manor house standing at the edge of a former manorial farmyard in the western part of the village of Lenešice, a few kilometers northwest of Louny in the Ústí Region of the Czech Republic.

How old is the settlement of Lenešice?

The village itself is first mentioned in writing in 1226, when it belonged to the Doksany monastery. It later passed to the monastery in Postoloprty, and after 1420 the town of Louny took control of it. From 1436 the estate changed hands repeatedly among pledged owners until 1588, when it was bought by Jan Černín of Chudenice. His son, Jiří Theobald Černín, turned Lenešice into an independent estate and, around 1599, founded a Renaissance manor on the site of an earlier fortified building within the farmyard.

Who shaped the castle into its current form?

The building took on the country-manor form it still shows today between 1650 and 1684, while the estate belonged to Jan Bohumír of Jungen and later to his son-in-law František (Zikmund) of Sárau, under whom the house was rebuilt — a sandstone gable on the western wall carries the date 1668 as evidence of this work. From 1684 the estate belonged to Jan Clary-Aldringen, who added a dining hall and eight rooms on the upper floor. Further rebuilding followed in 1767, under Maria Antonia von Clary-Aldringen, and again in 1821, after the property passed to the Schwarzenberg family. The last major repair took place in 1974.

What does the castle look like today?

The two-story building stands on a rectangular plan under a hip roof. Its nine-bay façade is punctuated by rectangular windows, those on the upper floor framed with wavy window surrounds carved with Roman-style molding. From the Baroque period, the entrance gate with its richly decorated gable is the most notable survivor. The castle has been listed as a protected cultural monument since 1964.

Who owns the castle now?

From the 1950s until 1990 the building housed the offices of the local agricultural cooperative (JZD). After 1990 it was bought by a private owner, who carried out its restoration. The castle remains privately owned today and is not a general-admission tourist attraction — visitors can appreciate its architecture mainly from the outside.
