Laguna u Bohdalova

About this place

Laguna u Bohdalova is a small but remarkable nature reserve tucked right beside the main road on the northern edge of the village of Bohdalov, in the Žďár nad Sázavou district of the Vysočina Region in the Czech Republic. It's a striking example of how former industrial activity can, over time, evolve into a valuable natural habitat — a system of five ponds now fills the pits left behind by clay and soil extraction for a nearby brick factory.

How did the Laguna come to be?

The site's story begins with a local brick factory that once relied on clay dug from this very ground. Once extraction stopped, the abandoned pits gradually filled with water, forming a network of five ponds of varying depth and character. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 579–580 meters above sea level, the area today forms part of the Bohdalovsko Nature Park.

What makes this place so ecologically important?

Laguna u Bohdalova holds the distinction of having the highest diversity of amphibians anywhere in the Vysočina Region. Historically, as many as 12 amphibian species have been documented here, including the crested newt, smooth newt, alpine newt, fire-bellied toad, several species of green frogs, the common toad, and the green toad. This exceptional richness means that every spring the ponds turn into a stage for intense amphibian courtship — the site fills with the distinctive chorus of croaking frogs, drawing nature lovers and photographers eager to witness the spectacle.

Notably, the site is also the only known location of alpine bistort in the entire Žďár area outside the Žďárské Vrchy Protected Landscape Area — a plant typically associated with higher-elevation terrain. This detail underscores just how unusual the microclimate and habitat conditions are in this compact but ecologically valuable spot.

Who takes care of the site?

The reserve is managed by the Krajina Association, which carried out a comprehensive restoration project between 2009 and 2012 to re-establish the water and habitat conditions amphibians need to thrive. The association continues regular upkeep, periodically draining the ponds and removing fish (which prey on amphibian eggs and larvae), mowing encroaching vegetation, and clearing invasive trees and shrubs that could shade the ponds and reduce their suitability for breeding.

How to get there

Laguna u Bohdalova sits directly alongside the main road running through Bohdalov, making it easy to reach. A paved path leads to the ponds, and convenient parking nearby means visiting this natural landmark doesn't require a long walk or any special preparation.
