Kubištovy sady

Hradec Králové, Czechia

About this place

Kubištovy Sady is a compact but historically layered park in the center of Hradec Králové, covering roughly 2.4 hectares between Pospíšilova avenue and the streets Švendova, Víta Nejedlého, Hradební and U Soudu.

Where is the park located?

The park works as a green buffer between the historic town center and the former Silesian suburb (Slezské Předměstí). This part of the city falls under heritage protection, so the layout of the greenery and the older trees carry protected status.

Where does the name come from?

The park has carried its current name since 1992, honoring the painter and graphic artist Bohumil Kubišta, who was born near Hradec Králové. Before that it was simply known by names tied to its function as municipal gardens.

When was the park created?

The gardens were laid out between 1905 and 1907, during a period when Hradec Králové was expanding its municipal greenery alongside the growth of Art Nouveau-era development, adding new representative avenues and squares.

What is hidden inside the park - the Imperial Road?

The most notable historical feature of Kubištovy Sady is the route of the old Imperial Road (Císařská cesta), including a tree-lined avenue dating back to 1867. The road began near today's Pospíšilova avenue, ran through what is now the park, and continued toward the Old Hospital. It was one of three main routes connecting Silesia to Hradec Králové, so it carried real transport significance well before the park took its present shape.

Has the park been renovated?

The city has for some time been preparing a comprehensive renovation of Kubištovy Sady. The plans include new plantings, street furniture, and uncovering and highlighting the historic Imperial Road, which today remains largely hidden from visitors walking through the park. The timeline for these works has been pushed back more than once in recent years.
