Kubánkov

Kubánkov is the highest summit of the Palkovické hůrky ridge, rising above the hamlet of Myslík, part of the municipality of Palkovice in the Moravian-Silesian region of the Czech Republic. At 660 metres above sea level, it stands out clearly among the gentler surrounding hills, and its telecommunications tower on top makes it easy to spot from the valleys below.

Where exactly is Kubánkov?

The hill rises just north of Myslík and west of the main village of Palkovice, inside the protected landscape area known as Palkovické hůrky. Myslík itself is a small settlement first recorded in 1564, tucked against the south-eastern foot of the ridge — which puts the summit within easy reach and makes Kubánkov a natural pick for a short walk for anyone staying nearby.

How do you get to the top?

Several marked trails lead to Kubánkov, covering a range of distances and effort levels:

• From the Palkovické hůrky junction — the shortest route, under 2 km with about 140 m of ascent, following a blue trail marker. Best choice if you just want to reach the viewpoint quickly.
• From Kozlovice — a yellow-marked route of roughly 4 km and 310 m of elevation gain, running partly along the Janáčkův chodníček educational trail, with information panels about composer Leoš Janáček, who spent time in the area.
• From Hukvaldy — the longest of the popular options, about 4.5 km and 350 m of ascent, on green and blue trails passing the Leoš Janáček memorial.

The Hůrky educational trail also crosses the summit itself, so Kubánkov works well as one stop on a longer walk across the whole ridge.

What will you see at the summit?

A handful of benches at the top invite a longer stop — since Kubánkov is the highest point of the entire Palkovické hůrky ridge, the views here are the best the range has to offer. Looking south, the panorama opens toward the Ondřejník massif, and on clear days you can pick out further peaks of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids beyond it. The telecommunications tower on the summit isn't an attraction in its own right, but it doubles as a useful landmark visible from the surrounding countryside.

It's worth combining the hike with a stop at the nearby Myslíkovské Lurdy, a small Lourdes-style grotto chapel and an important pilgrimage site just above Myslík, or with a visit to the Leoš Janáček memorials in Hukvaldy.

When is the best time to visit?

Thanks to its modest height and gentle approaches, Kubánkov is accessible almost year-round. Spring and autumn tend to bring the clearest air and the best visibility toward the distant Beskid peaks, summer suits longer routes that link several educational trails, and in winter, when snow conditions allow, the paths are pleasant for a relaxed snowshoe walk as well.
